Terra Plana Shoes, the Shoes that Care

The name literally means “flat land”.  It is Galahad Clark’s company that set itself to producing fashionable yet eco-friendly footwear that one can truly claim to be the shoes that care.  Terra Plana’s inspiration is basically the ecological survival through the production of non-generic products.  It makes use of materials that will not harm the environment and the ecosystem such as pure latex soles, chrome-free leather, recycled materials, vegetable-tanned leather, foam boot beds and rubber soles that are recycles and just recently, the E-leather, which is a by-product of leather that is eco-revolutionary.  Terra Plana believes that the staples of shoe-making sustainability rely on its lightness, reparability, durability and anatomic design.

Mens & Womens Terra Plana Shoes

The women’s and men’s footwear manufactured by Terra Plana company comes in four brands, Terra Plana, Dopie, Worn Again and Vivo Barefoot.  The company is based in London with offices in Vienna, New York and China.  In 2007, it won an award for being Product of the Year for the Observer Ethical Fashion.  The last four years that Clark handled the company, it has already grown to be accepted as an international footwear brand that is now also selling wholesale and for distribution throughout the USA, Europe and Australia.  In terms of market, Terra Plana’s is quite broad, attracting students and young skates to fashionable people and even politicians.  It caters to a variety of audience which differ in taste.

What leather is used in Terra Plana Shoes?

The leather used in Terra Plana shoes is sourced across China and Europe.  It makes use of fabric materials in their footwear, most popular of which are the recycled quilts purchased from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.  As already mentioned, Terra Plana is the first ever user of the E-leather in the footwear they manufacture.  E-leather is actually a combination of textile and leather off-cuts that are sewn together to turn into a very long and quite smooth piece of material that is great for making footwear.  Another first from Terra Plana is their introduction of a lightweight but durable sole that is made from EVA rubber and rice husks, all recycled.  The sole has a layer of cork inside it.

The Terra Plana Design

The Terra Plana shoes are designed with the concept of sustainability in mind and has search the whole world for possible eco-friendly materials to be used.  According to Terra Plana’s big boss, Galahad Clark, sustainable design simply means good design.  These are products that liked by its users but do not cause any harm.  This is the very reason why Terra Plana evaluates and re-evaluates their operation and production regularly to make sure that toxin use and waste is at its very minimal but the product use at its maximum.  The shoes even come in recycled cardboard boxes with each shoe inside a reusable bag.

Terra Plana shoes managed to capture the hearts of a very wide market since it was successful in combining style and fashion with economical and harmless materials.  This is a truly amazing feat to achieve.  It is about time that others start putting their concern where it really counts.  Let us love our nature so that it will love us back.  Any little share will do a lot of good in the long run.  Making use of these types of footwear is a step to that little share.
